The hotel is situated on a hillside which was the first minus of the holiday as my husband has not been too well. Reception and the road out is on the third floor level, the dining room on the second floor level and the bar, disco and accommodation blocks of which there quite a few, on level one. We were given a map of the campus with our accommodation block circled and then sent on our way to find it. We had to walk down two flights of stairs to the lower level because the lifts were out when we arrived and our luggage took an hour to find us.
We had read previous reviews and decided not to go down to dinner too early but when we did at 7.15 we were shown to a table in what we assumed was the family area where we were surrounded by ill mannered, squealing German children. However on subsequent evenings when we went down just before eight and sat in other areas of the vast, and I mean vast, dining room things were no different and we longed for a child free zone. The food was good but it was a route march to get to and go round the buffet.
The path to the sun terraces was down hill and when we arrived there were no sun umbrellas and only a few rustic pergolas under which people who needed a little shade (like my husband) could sit and these were all taken. Of the 1400 or so guests I am sure 1200 were German and these were very vocal, talking across us when we were lucky enough to get a couple of suitable beds. To get on the beach there was another steep path when you got through the gate which was supposed to be kept locked to repel outside visitors. I am sorry to say this was invariably wedged open by, I am told, our continental cousins, and one day the sewer cover was belching out dirty water which filled the gateway and though which everyone going to and coming from the beach had to walk.
We had never seen such a large piano bar or a large dining room. Full marks to the staff for their efficiency but I know they were under pressure from the sheer number of guests. There is nowhere to walk outside the hotel and the terrain is very hilly and so we would say it is ok for families but not for older people and really we would leave the whole place to the Germans who seem to have made it their own anyway.
