Our first time to Cape Verde, bit shocked (as were other fellow travellers) by the some of the surroundings at the resort, very baron surroundings with a definate African feel about the place with quite a bit of poor or sub standard housing and poor infrasructure, locals can appear intimidatiing if you are not used to this envioronment but in the main seem friendly especially if they can sell you some local carvings or artifax. Changing money can be a pain with long ques at banks, two currencies just to confuse you, local escudoes and Euroes, if you pay in euroes you get the change in escudoes, sometimes you pay in Escudoes and get the change in euroes even with a calculcator you may still wonder whether you have been 'tucked up' you probably havn't but it does leave you confused, some local good restaurants will change stirling to escudoes which is your best bet especially if you get to know the owner by regular dining. There are some good restaurants with fish being the main offer however be selective where you eat, other travellers would no doubt recommend the best places so ask around. So what are the good bits? Firstly the beach which goes on for miles and must be one of the best beaches this side of the Atlantic with a Carabian look, (Please excuse my spelling), can be quite windy with excellent wind / kite sailing facilities, secondly almost garunteed sunshine for most of the day, the sea breeze and wind can be deceptive so take care when sun bathing, catch youyself in the bathroom mirror when you return to your hotel and you will see what I mean. The whole area around Santa Maria is undergoing massive development, construction is everwhere with and parts of the resort reminding one of the back streets of war zones in the Middle East. This will no doubt improve and by 2020 we will have another Tenerife in easy reach of the UK. Finally there is a lot of hype in the travel press about these islands, we only visited Sal which is quite baron apart from sand and cement, other islands (Some nine in all) may offer something extra. If you are feeling adventurous give it a go, take the hype with a pinch of salt, by the way there's plenty of that on Sal too! all the best NJ.
