We have travelled to Thailand on two occasions before and this time werre seeking something a little different, as we wanted to see more of the real country. The Thais are so friendly and hospitable almost everywhere, but in the tourist areas this increasingly seems to be tempered with commercialism.
Anyway, we were recommended a vacation villa in the Northeast of the country, called Gecko Villa, about 14 miles from Udon Thani. We "googled" it and booked online. The house is set in the open countryside with rice paddies and little villages and temples all around. It had 3 bedrooms, a huge living room, a kitchen and, best of all, a private swimming pool for us alone! The house was really comfortable and we were made to feel completely at home by the kind host family, who lived in a village a little way away, but who always came to cook us great Thai meals, each day, and took us to see the local sights.
The children loved the house and pool, and we enjoyed staying in a vacation villa where we did not have to cook or clean! We would definietly recommend this place to others.
Whilst the hosts spoke English, very few of the Thais around the area spoke any at all, although we seemed to get by with smiles and sign language--but a phrase book might have been a good idea!
