I have never been inclined to write a review of a holiday before. Though I can honestly say, wherever we have have been with Saga, it has always been excellent value and totally relaxing.
So why do I want to tell you about Vietnam, or the part of it we stayed at in particular - Hoi an?
First and foremost for us it was the people, We have met very nice folk in our travels. Kind , courtious, obliging etc., The folk of Hoi an are that and oh, so much more! They have a natural grace and charm that one rarely meets today. From the young workers in the hotel, whatever their job, to the old lady selling her wares in the market place, they are proud of who they are, and have a confidence and asuredness in what they do. They made me feel priviliged to know them.
Hoi an Town is about an hours drive out of Da Nang, which is about midway down the coast of Vietnam. It is rural, and so there is plenty of countryside, which means paddyfields a plenty, and a fair share of livestock. Though we slept very soundly, it was good to wake to the sound of a cock crowing, which would set off all the neighbouring cocks in reply! It was light be six thirty a.m.. Sunset about six in the evening. Twelve hours of daylight in December, lovely. Of course, warm and sunny too, get the picture?
The Hoi an Trails resort is a sixty room hotel, not too big, on three floors, not too high. Very pretty gardens, and resturant second to none. The chef and his assistants produced magnificent banquets on both Christmas and New Years eve. All the staff were involved in making the celebrations on both nights most enjoyable.
The town itself was a buzz of activity, everyone gets about on either bicycles or motorbikes of one kind or another. There are also "cycloes" which were great fun to ride. Then for a more conventional ride, there were plenty of efficient, clean and cheap taxi's.
The old town has world heritage recognition, and is beautiful when lite up by lanterns every month on the night of the full moon. Also candles are lit at this time and floated on the river in flower shaped containers, so pretty. Everyone is on the street enjoying. It's like carnival time every month.
Vietnam has a very interesting and ancient history, and the people of today have a great respect for their forbares, whom they commemorate on special dates within the family.
I have made some very good friends in Hoi an, and will be visiting again!

Looking for somewhere to go last Christmas l choose Veitnam. The people are lovely, so friendly. All want to know where you are from and very chatty, most speak English. The hotel we stayed at was very nice.Out of the main town, but they had a bus into town about 7 times a day, also one to the beach. The staff waited on us hand and foot, all eager to please. The rooms were upgraded and were like mini suites, all well maintained. The food very tasty, we had waiter service and a choice of 3 meals for each course.Things are very cheap and we didn't spend much money. We heard of a cookery school where you could go and practice cooking, so thought we would try it out. It only cost £7.50 for the morning and was very good, the chef very amusing. We ate what we had cooked later. It included a boat ride and visit to the market to see the produce. You can do boat trips on your own from the harbour where the ferries come and go.
If you are thinking of going, go now before it gets too commercialised. The only thing l do regret, is not seeing more of the country. I stayed here for 3 weeks. But saw coach parties of various nationalities coming and going all the time, as they were touring and going on to other countries. But will certainly go back.
