Bechtesgadener Land is sheltered by Germany's second highest mountain, the Watzmann, and so enjoys some of Europe's most spectacular mountain scenery. It also has a rich and interesting history, which comes to life when you walk down the quaint cobbled streets and visit the charming little cafes that are found around the Royal Castle.
Walkers will not be disappointed with a holiday in Bechtesgadener Land, as with its 240km of hiking paths you will be able to enjoy a different trail every day if you so wish! Many of the trails take you through the National Park, and there are of course many little mountain huts and restaurants to stop in along the way. The nature lovers among you will also be pleased you hear that the walking trails are often punctuated by a wide range of flora, and there are many alpine animals to spot too. Guided walks are organised by the tourist office, and we recommend that if you only choose to do one walk, you try the Jenner Mountain trail, where you can take in one of the most famous mountain views. The Jenner is also served by a summer gondola lift (mid-May - Oct) so walking the whole trail is not compulsory!
