Nauplion Holiday Reviews

Send to Friend

Nauplion is a stunningly pretty place for a holiday; it lies nestled into the northern corner of the Argolic Gulf and was modern Greece's first capital after the country was liberated from the Turks in 1828. The Venitian occupation that took place during the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries has left its mark on the town, leaving a charming Italianate legacy. Majestic neoclassical mansions are scattered throughout the streets, whilst elegant marble-paved squares are a charming feature.

The cobbled alleyways are scattered with Turkish wall fountains and vibrant bougainvillaea, with balconied houses tucked alongside them. Down palm-lined avenues the ring of church bells can be heard. Just along from the hustle and bustle of the portside lies a modern promenade that sweeps round the bay, and gives the perfect vantage point for Nauplion's fantastic relic, the grand Palidi fortress. This is positioned on a high outcrop and has stone walls that run around the rocky hills to make an unmissable sight. Looking across the bay, there is another seventeenth century Venitian fortress that stands in the middle of the vibrant harbour backed by distant green mountains. This smaller, romantic reminder of the republic's rule, the Bourtzi, rises from a little islet. Although this area is full of people and life, it is by no means overrun by tourists, giving a sense of timeless Greece to make holidaymakers feel that they have discovered a very special secret indeed.
