As Europe's deepest lake, Lake Como has a great deal to offer its holiday makers. The resorts of Menaggio, Tremezzo, Cadenabbia, Tremezzina and Lenno, are situated on the sunny, western shore with Bellagio perched on the promontory that divides Como and Lecco. Bellagio and Menaggio are the largest resorts, and are renowed for there atmosphere,cobbled alleyways and cafes.
The adjacent villages of Tremezzo, Tremezzina and Cadenabbia are found along the road from Como to Switzerland, and all the villages and resorts are within easy reach of one another. Lenno, which is the smallest of the resorts, is perfect for a quiet getaway, and is known amongst holiday makers as a haven of tranquility. When paying this resort a visit be sure to take in its stunning lake views.
If your visit falls during July or August be sure to visit the concerts at Villa Carlotta, and whatever time of year you visit Lake Como be sure to visit the famous villas and gardens that punctuate the scenery.
The resorts are well equipped with many bars, cafes, restaurants, banks, a post office, doctors' surgery, and pharmacy. Cormo is reachable by bus, and there you will find a regular rail service to Milan. Guests who stay in Bellagio need to take the ferry for transfers and will need to transport their luggage also.
The surrounding area is a walker's haven, with terrain suitable for everything from a gentle stroll to a more challenging hike. For a more gentle walk, you can cross the peninsula, on paths over the ridge from Bellagio, to the villages of Pescallo and Loppia, or enjoy the view from the Punta Spartivento. However, please note that less mobile visitors might find some of the steep cobbled streets difficult to manage.
In terms of rambling, the mountains behind Tremezzo are perfect. Favourites amongst holiday makers are a steep climb to Griante, the church of San Martino and the Villa Monastero.
