The Langham Hotel in London is apparently the model for the grand hotel in England- and it seems like it. The extravagant Victorian exterior with its huge bay windows hints at the opulence within, which does not disappoint; after being closed for forty years or more, the whole place was given a fantastic refurb a few years ago and is now under Oriental ownership, with very superior levels of service. If like us you look on the hotels own website, you should find a deal which, even if still on the pricey side by other standards, is pretty good value for London, which remains a hugely expensive place to stay in a hotel, and is really amazing for a place of this calibre.

Another great thing is the location. In about ten or fiften minutes you could walk to any central London theatre, masses of restaurants in Soho, Covent Garden, the shops in Oxford Street, Regent Street and Bond Street, or up to the green open spaces of Regents park- we even went to the Zoo!

The leisure club is in an annexe but directly accessible from the hotel with a swimming pool down in the former vault of a bank, also with sauna and steam rooms- all in keeping with the general air of luxury. There is also a gym.

We took a standard class room but as they were not full, the receptionist took the trouble to find us a larger than average room; very well decorated and appointed with TV with numerous movie channels; the only downside was there was no view at all- we looked out across an internal courtyard but at least that kept it quiet.

With so many other options nearby, we didnt use the restaurant for dinner but the breakfast was fantastic. Also we indulged in the archaic English ritual of full afternoon tea, with far more cakes than we should have eaten for a price which is steep until you compare it with what is charged elsewhere for the same thing.

For easy access to everything you would be likely to want on a trip to London, combined with excellent service, facilities and luxury at a realistic price, I think it would be hard to beat. We fully intend to stay there again.

Tim Roberts said, "Although booked into the Buckingham 'a sister hotel down the road' we found ourselves shunted to The Clarendon. We were allocated a room on 'the lower ground floor', i.e. in the basement. The room itself was acceptable: reasonably-sized, with en suite, and in good decorative order...."
