Wow Cuba its beautiful we stay at the Mercure Playa de Oro from March 9 to March 18 /09 we had beautiful weather we went on the Safari tour it was excellant and very organize we had a really good time . Now we should appreciate what we have here in Canada. What really touch my heart was to see these little kids when we went for the tour to see them coming to the Jeef for treats with a smile . I would go back to Cuba ,its was a nice vacation.

The beach is fabulous, the employees are great, the food is lousy and the rooms were mouldy and musty. I would not recommend this place to anyone. This hotel was rated as a 4 star however it has a hard time living up to a 2 star. I think a lot of the resorts are very old and outdated not just this one according to fellow travellers. Will not go back to Cuba.

Jan 11/09 had to wait some time before we got our room The room had 2 twin beds, we pushed the beds together , one side of the bed had broken boards, sometimes we had hot water sometimes we didn't have hot water, trouble with the toilet constantly. Our stay was for 2 weeks and this was the first time we looked forward to coming home. The meals were set out in the breakfast period and stayed there until late night. The beach is beautiful but they don't seem to appreciate it as they don't clean it every day or so. We had some good meals when we visited the two restaurants. Ike did alot of damage to the front of the hotel section-eg snack bar roof and stage wiped out totally. Many 100 workers worked very hard to fix everything. This resort was exactly what we expected. If you want perfect, stay home or find a perfect resort in Varadero and let us know which one it is! The hotel itself was great: common areas/bathrooms were clean, grounds were very nice, pools were very clean and there were always plenty of lounge chairs. Was everything perfect?? No, is your house and yard perfect?? Food was also fine, if food is extremely important to your vacation this place may not be for you, infact Cuba may not be for you. We found that there was always something good to eat at the buffet - always fresh bread, eggs and omelets for breakfast, pasta bars, pizza, burgers for lunch (just to name a few items) - I could not imagine anyone having to starve here! It's a short time out of your life, you will always get to eat your favorite foods again - take it for what it's worth! Personally, we don't holiday to eat non-stop and put on weight. We had one lunch at the Tainos snack bar, that was also fine. We ate at 2 of the 3 ala cartes (italian and seafood). We enjoyed both, but did favour the Italian, we ate there twice and reservation staff were very nice at accomodating us with a last minute reservation on our last night at the resort. We also left the resort one evening for lobster dinner at the nearby Chez Palace...delicious! Our room was comfortable, we stayed in room 310 in the North section and have no complaints. Room was very clean (Maid Maria did an awesome job)! Everything in our room was in good working order and we had a brand new bar fridge. All staff members were friendly and very hard working, we tipped with $$ as well as some gifts from home, but not all of the time and we certainly didn't feel that it was expected or that we got better service because of that. Staff was genuinely thankful for anything we had to offer them. They were always warm and friendly - no staff complaints from us. Beach was fabulous, one of the nicest stretches within that area. Beach bar (La Coleta) and washrooms were a little far from the beach but again no big deal, nothing we couldn't deal with. Animation staff was a ton of fun, we got quite friendly with all of them and had a great time participating in the daily activities. We would return to this resort, although we do prefer to check out a different place each time, just for variety. I would recommend this place to friends and family. Go with an open mind to be on a laid back vacation and just relax and have a good time! As for all of the reviews on this resort - don't get too hung up on them. Personally, we haven't been on a bad vacation yet - life is what you make of it. Take the reviews from the optimists and the reviews from the pessimists and split the difference. You may then have a somewhat accurate idea of what to expect from the Oasis Brisas Del Caribe.
